In a remarkable journey of compassion and resilience, the Pu’uhonua O Nene initiative stands as a beacon of hope and solidarity for Lahaina's most vulnerable. From September 26, 2023, to January 12, 2024, in partnership with Project Vision, Nā Kia‘i O Maui embarked on a mission that went beyond the immediate aftermath of the wildfires – to address a chronic challenge magnified by the disaster: homelessness.

Pu’uhonua O Nene, translating to 'Refuge of the Nene' in Hawaiian, symbolizes a sanctuary for those most in need. With the concerted efforts of volunteers, donors, and community leaders, we successfully constructed and managed 28 tents, providing a safe and dignified living space for 150 individuals affected by homelessness before and after the fires.

This initiative represents more than just temporary housing. It is a testament to the power of collective action and the deep-seated value of 'ohana that underpins our community. By offering shelter, we also provided a foundation for rebuilding lives, with access to support services aimed at fostering independence and resilience among our residents.

The journey of Pu’uhonua O Nene highlights the critical importance of addressing all facets of a disaster's impact, including the social vulnerabilities that exist within our communities. It has shown us that by coming together, we can create sustainable solutions to longstanding issues, making our community stronger and more cohesive in the process.

The success of Pu’uhonua O Nene would not have been possible without the unwavering support and dedication of our volunteers, partners, and the community at large. This initiative has paved the way for ongoing discussions and actions towards sustainable living solutions and social support systems for Lahaina’s homeless population.

As we move forward, let the story of Pu’uhonua O Nene serve as a reminder of what we can achieve when we unite in purpose and action. It's a story of hope, transformation, and the relentless spirit of a community determined to rise above challenges and build a brighter future for all its members.
